Back Pain Q & A

Is back pain serious?

A majority of people will experience back pain at some time in their lives. In fact, experts estimate that back pain will affect as many as 8 out of 10 people at some point. While most people experience temporary back pain that resolves on its own, others experience chronic back pain.

What causes back pain?

Back pain can occur for many different reasons. Some of the most common causes of back pain include:

  • Acute injury: Some cases of back pain occur because of an injury to the tissues in the back, such as a sprain or strain.
  • Degenerative disc disease: This common condition occurs when the intervertebral discs in the back begin to break down with age.
  • Herniated discs: When 1 of the intervertebral discs bulges or tears, it can press on the nerves in the back, which causes pain.
  • Structural abnormalities: Structural abnormalities like scoliosis or bone spurs may cause back pain for some patients.

Other possible causes of back pain include overuse, poor posture, and arthritis.

How does Back to Health Chiropractic treat back pain?

The doctors at Back to Health Chiropractic customize all back pain treatment programs based on the needs of the patient. Before developing a treatment program, the doctor performs a physical exam and orders tests to identify the cause of the patient’s pain. Once the doctors understands the factors contributing to the pain, they can develop an appropriate treatment program.

Every patient’s treatment plan is different. However, typical treatment plans include physiotherapy, soft tissue manipulation, spinal manipulation, corrective exercises, and/or lifestyle advice.

Is chiropractic care effective for the treatment of back pain?

The goal of treatment programs at Back to Health Chiropractic isn’t only to alleviate pain, but also to help the patient improve strength and stability in the back. Over time, patients who participate in these treatment programs enjoy less pain, better range of motion, and an improved quality of life.

Many patients notice back pain relief after the first treatment session. However, patients won’t experience the full results of treatment until they’ve attended several sessions at Back to Health Chiropractic.
